Needless to say it had been an exciting lesson for the young Canadian, and they’d been given such interesting books to read. Oscar Wildes ‘a picture of dorian grey’ had been one of the titles while Jane Austin’s ‘Pride and Prejudice’ had been the other. She’d read Pride and Prejudice before and it was one of her favourites! She simply loved all of the characters especially the female protaganist who so forward in her attitude for that era of time. She grinned as she thought of the main character, the tall dark and brooding Mr Darcy he was so sulky, and not to mention once you understood the language it was actually really funny. She giggled softly to herself as she wandered through the large corridor.
And although she hadn’t made many friends yet, but she was still really enjoying herself. Even if she didn’t make friends immediately she’d still enjoy her time at the academy, there were so many things to study that Maddie was sure she’d be far to engrossed in her studies to really miss hanging out with people... She let her thoughts trail off sadly as she glumly followed the long carpet hallway down to where the lockers were situated. At least she still had her polar bear plushie (kumakuro was it? For company so even if people did forget about her she really wouldn’t mind. She opened her locker and hugged the plushie tightly, it was so comforting, and not to mention it smelled of home.
But suddenly her violet eyes widened in horror as she realised she had totally forgotten where her next class was! She bit her lip nervously as her eyes trailed the almost empty corridor. There had to be someone she could ask. Then she spotted someone, plucking up her courage she wandered over to the lone figure.
“E-excuse me.” She stuttered softly “b-but could you tell me where Room 4 c is?” she asked her stutter becoming more pronounced.

Today was a busy day for Kiku, who apparently, was now expected to learn and serve at the same time. While many of his peers had been excited to go to school like 'normal' people, Kiku was really not looking forward to this at all. Kiku lived to serve other people, and he would rather get the full education as a server rather than waste his time here. Because as much as Kiku would have liked to interact with his future masters and mistresses, he had a family name to keep up.
...which surprisingly, was not worth much. His family had always been some sort of middle class, and they had decided when they had Kiku, that he would go to a special school so he would never be too short on money. His manners were naturally top notch, and he didn't have as much trouble adapting as most newbies did. However, he was nowhere close to being an expert, and those who had been in the service of a certain family for decades were miles ahead of him.
He sighed, staring intently at his schedule sheet. He was supposed to go to Room 4C. Not quite sure where that was, Kiku looked around for the class, when a voice stopped him in his tracks.
"E-excuse me. B-but could you tell me where Room 4 c is?"
Turning around he spotted a young girl, looking as nervous as he himself felt. the girl had soft facial features and carried a large book. Giving the girl a once over, Kiku could only guess that she was most likely not a servant such as he. Giving her what he believed to be an apologetic look but was actually a look of apathy, he shook his head.
"I am truly sorry miss, but I am afraid that I am also heading that way." He was careful to use the overly polite words that he had learnt in his lessons, keeping his tone of voice light. Seeing as the girl seemed quite nervous, Kiku would try to put her mind at ease as much as he could. "Would you like to look for this class together? I gather that since we are by Room 2B and this is the second floor, Room 4C may be the fourth floor."
He started walking slowly, so that this girl and him could walk together; people in middle class usually didn't know what to do in the presence of servants, so he would have to walk together or ahead, as to keep the other from feeling uncomfortable. "Here, let me take your belongings." he said, offering his hands so he could take her stuff.

It was reassuring at least, and after all the teachers couldn’t really hold it against them if they were both late she just hoped they’d understand Maddie hated getting into trouble! And she hated being yelled at, or worse criticised! It made her feel so uncomfortable, not to mention sick. Maddie didn’t do well under scrutiny and if someone was to embarrass her because she was late Maddie wouldn’t know what to do. She pushed her worries aside and tried her best to not like nearly as nervous as she did.
“I-if you don’t mind walking with me, then yeah.” She smiled happily “That’d be great.” He seemed nice enough; he was really polite too, which made it a easier for the young Canadian to talk to. “Oh,” she chuckled softly “I guess you’re right,” she blushed at how silly she must have looked, searching for a class that wasn’t even on the right floor. It took her by surprise when he asked to take her book almost instinctively her hands tightened on the paper backed novel. Her violet eyes stared dumbfounded at it for a moment before she quickly replied.
“O-oh, no its okay.” She smiled “I don’t mind carrying it, I wouldn’t want to trouble you.” She smiled. “I’m Madeline.” She said as they began the long walk to the class room “A-are you knew here to?” she asked wondering how many new students there actually were. From what she’d gathered, the academy had just recently opened its doors to poorer or middle class students. And Maddie was curious to which group the boy belonged to.

The girl was certainly a funny one. Her demeanour and facial expression changed so often and so abruptly that Kiku couldn’t help but smile at her. She was definitely not one of the upper class, he thought. She was pretty, with dusty blonde hair and violet eyes. He was not used to seeing as many foreigners as he did now, because he had spent most of his life in Japan, going to a normal school.
“My name is Kiku.” He said softly, pulling his hand back and walking along side her. She seemed to be uncomfortable with Kiku’s offer to carry her books. Perhaps she was very new to this. His thoughts were confirmed when Maddie asked him if he was also new, and he smiled despite himself. “Yes, I am also new.” He paused, not very sure what to say. The short time he had been here, interaction with other students seemed difficult because he was a servant; the upper class had no business talking to him, and the lower class generally felt uncomfortable. “I am studying here as a servant, so please do not feel hesitant to let me carry your books.” He said despite knowing that it would make her feel uncomfortable.
Walking up the stairs, Kiku readjusted his shoulder bag so it was more comfortable on him. Being in a prestigious school meant that the school itself was very large, and the stairs seemed to wind on for the longest time. Despite being a servant and his main job being, to serve, Kiku didn’t have much stamina and soon felt himself tire.
Being a servant was his job, after all. If Kiku was seen walking around and letting other people hold their own bags, he would definitely be scrutinized. And he would definitely be ridiculed if he were seen staggering by the stairs as an actual student tried to help him. In a way, the girl would be securing his title as a servant in the academy if she would let him help. It would most likely not stick for long, but Kiku was tired of being the servant without anybody to actually serve. Of course, if she did deny his request to help her with her books, Kiku would respect her wishes. It had been a while since anyone had directly approached him to talk to him. It had happened a few days ago when many people3 were new to the school, but as they made friends and acquaintances, those random encounters had also stopped.

It was totally knew to her, perhaps if she was one of the upper class students she’d have handled the situation better, but she wasn’t and she’d never met a trainee servant before. It seemed quite odd though and to the young Canadian it seemed a little dated for the upper class students to have servants doing everything for them. In fact in Maddie’s own opinion it seemed borderline rude!
“O, well it’s great to meet other new students, eh?” She smiled as they began the long slog up the stair case. Everything about the school was so majestically from the dark wooden rich carpeted staircases to the fine wallpaper and expensive painting’s that adorned the wall, it was if the ancient architect who had designed the manor had this in mind all along. She smiled softly as her eyes lit up as they landed on a copy a favourite painting of hers. “It gets so busy,” she said with a light blush as she quickly avoided being bumped into by another student that was rushing down the stairs “My old school wasn’t half as big as this.” Said Maddie in awe. “It’s s-so strange to,” she mused “in my old school everybody knew of each other, but here it’s so big I’d be surprised if I could name all the people in our year group.” She smiled. ... | notes - Kiku I choose youwords - 365credit - paddy, on the edge! |
